UK daily death toll surpasses 900 for first time

More than 900 people are reported to have died from coronavirus in UK hospitals in a day, fast approaching the deadliest days in Italy and Spain, the European countries worst hit by the virus.

The government announced an increase of 938 deaths, taking the UK’s total to 7,097.

Despite the new record daily death toll, the number of new infections and hospital admissions in Britain is beginning to show signs of flattening, according to Prof Stephen Powis, the NHS medical director for England.

The number of new infections increased by 5,491 – a similar rate to the last few days.

Speaking at the daily coronavirus press briefing on Wednesday, Powis said: “We are beginning to see the benefits I believe but the really critical thing is that we have to continue following instructions – we have to continue following social distancing, because if we don’t the virus will start to spread again.”

Nurses forced to wear bin bag as PPE, test positive for corona virus

Three nurses who wore bin bags on their shifts due to a shortage in personal protective equipment (PPE) have reportedly tested positive for coronavirus. Just weeks ago, the nurses had shared a photo of themselves wrapped in clinical waste bags as they issued a plea for proper masks, gowns and gloves at Northwick Park Hospital, in Harrow. The hospital previously declared an emergency situation after all of its critical care beds were filled with patients. More than 50% of staff working on one ward have now tested positive for coronavirus, the Daily Telegraph reports.

Lockdown may be extended to May

Ministers are said to be preparing to extend the UK lockdown into May, with advisers insisting the coronavirus peak could still be ten days away. In Wednesday’s Downing Street briefing, Chancellor Rishi Sunak refused to give any hints on if the restrictions would be eased, adding there would be a Cobra meeting to review the situation on Thursday, chaired by Dominic Raab. However, the government has reportedly been told the country’s deadliest day could be April 18, meaning that Britons will be told to stay inside until at least next month. It comes after the UK death toll jumped by 938 people in just one day – a bigger increase than on Italy’s worst day of the outbreak according to Metro News
