CQC New Approach to Home Care Registration
The latest confirmed Care Quality Commission (CQC) guidance updates effective from 9 February 2026 that affects providers:
1. Stricter registration submission requirements
From 9 February 2026 , CQC has updated how it handles new registration applications for care services such as home care, supported living, residential and nursing homes. Under the new approach, if applications are incomplete or inaccurate at the point of submission, CQC will return or reject them without progressing to a full assessment. This is designed to reduce delays and improve the quality and consistency of decisions by ensuring providers submit complete and correct information first time.
2. Increased emphasis on core documentation
Providers must ensure that all required supporting evidence — especially key policies like consent and data governance — accompany their application. Failure to include these documents now results in early rejection rather than a request for further information later. CQC’s stated aim is to make the registration system more efficient and predictable, but it means applicants need to be better prepared and comprehensive in their submission.
Key Changes Effective 09 February 2026:
- Immediate Rejection of Incomplete Applications: Applications that are not complete, accurate, or lack required supporting documentation at the point of receipt will be returned/rejected immediately without being assessed.
- Revised Supporting Documents: New, updated checklists for supporting documents are in effect for all service types.
- Supported Living & Care Home Focus: Specific, additional forms and documents are now required for supported living services and care home applicants.
- Data & Consent Focus: There is a heightened, explicit focus on ensuring that policies, systems, and governance arrangements regarding data, consent, and information governance are fully in place before submission.
- Stricter DBS Checks: The CQC will reject applications if the Registered Manager’s or Nominated Individual’s enhanced DBS certificate is out of date (older than 12 months) during the assessment process.
