The registered manager interview is the CQC conversation that decides whether the person named on your registration is approved to hold the role. We prepare registered managers and nominated individuals for that interview with mock questioning, evidence review, and fit and proper person readiness.
Why the interview matters
CQC interviews the proposed registered manager as part of assessing a provider application, and it can also interview the nominated individual. The interview is not a formality.
CQC can refuse to register a manager who cannot demonstrate the knowledge, experience, and integrity the role requires. Because the manager and provider applications are linked, that delays the provider's registration until a suitable manager is approved.
What we cover
How it works
We confirm the registered manager meets CQC's expectations on qualifications, experience, and fit and proper person status.
We identify where answers are thin: safeguarding thresholds, the Mental Capacity Act, duty of candour, regulated activities.
We run a realistic interview and give direct feedback on content, specifics, and delivery.
We make sure the documents behind the answers exist and are current.
We tell you whether to proceed or prepare further, with a clear list of what is left.
What to expect
CQC assessors want specific examples from your own experience, not recited policy. A manager who can describe how they actually handled a safeguarding concern, a capacity assessment, or a staffing shortfall comes across as credible.
The interview can be scheduled at short notice once the provider application is being assessed, so preparation needs to start before the application is submitted, not after the interview is booked.
FAQ
The registered manager interview is a structured conversation with a CQC assessor that forms part of deciding whether to register the person named as registered manager on a provider's application. It tests their knowledge of the regulations, their experience of running care, and whether they meet the fit and proper person requirements.
The fit and proper person requirement is CQC's test that a person in a senior care role is of good character, has the right qualifications, skills and experience, is physically and mentally able to do the job, and has not been responsible for serious misconduct or mismanagement. It applies to registered managers and, through a related requirement, to directors and the nominated individual.
CQC asks about safeguarding, the Mental Capacity Act and Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards, staffing and recruitment, complaints and duty of candour, how you would handle specific incidents, and how you assure quality. Answers are expected to be specific to your service rather than general statements of policy.
No. CQC does not charge a separate fee for the registered manager application, and there is no upfront fee for the provider application either — CQC's fees are annual and only start once your registration takes effect. The registered manager does need their own enhanced DBS check and has to provide supporting documents.
Yes, CQC can decline to register a proposed registered manager if they cannot demonstrate the required knowledge, experience, or fit and proper person status. Because the manager and provider applications are linked, this holds up the provider's registration until a suitable manager is in place and approved.
Start preparing before the provider application is submitted, because CQC can schedule the interview at short notice once the application is being assessed. Managers who leave preparation until the interview is booked often do not have time to close knowledge or evidence gaps.
